Extended Open+ hours increase access across selected Peterborough Libraries

Posted on: 02/03/2026

On the 2 March, Peterborough Libraries extended their Open+ access hours at two libraries, increasing opportunities for local residents to use library facilities at more convenient times.

The extended Open+ service is available at:

  • Woodston Library – additional 27 hours
  • Thorney Library – additional 53.5 hours

This represents a total of 80.5 additional Open+ hours per week across the two libraries.

Open+ is a free, unstaffed library service that uses secure electronic access to allow library members to use the facilities outside of normal staffed hours. The system is supported by security cameras, access control technology and automated self-service library equipment. During Open+ hours, members can browse, borrow and return items, use public computers and enjoy study spaces independently.

Firzana Shaheen, Service Manager for Peterborough Libraries, said:

"We’re pleased to have extended our Open+ hours to give residents greater flexibility in how and when they use their local library. These additional hours will make a real difference for people and ensures our libraries remain welcoming and accessible community spaces."

Access to Open+ requires members to opt in. To join, customers simply need to speak to a member of staff at any one of their libraries and agree to the Terms and Conditions: https://peterboroughlibraries.org.uk/open-plus

The extension of Open+ hours enables Peterborough Libraries to offer extended access in a cost-efficient way, allowing communities to benefit from greater availability of services.

Peterborough Libraries operate 10 libraries across the city, plus a mobile library service. Join Peterborough Libraries, it's free!
