Electoral Register

What is the Electoral Register and what can I use it for?

The Full Electoral Register (ER) contains the names and addresses of everyone who is registered to vote within each voting authority. This is a public document and can be viewed under supervision with an appointment at the Peterborough Archives Service, Central Library. Making copies and/or taking photos of an ER younger than 10 years old is against the law. Although, you can take notes on paper with a pencil.

Our number one enquiry regarding the ER is from people wishing to locate an old friend but unfortunately the ER cannot be used for this purpose. You cannot search the ER by name. It is published in alphabetical order of address within polling districts. We can help you determine which polling district you’ll need if you know the street but it is not possible to locate someone without first knowing their address. There is no guarantee that the person you’re looking for will be listed as they may have opted to register to vote anonymously.

If you’re trying to trace someone and you don’t know their address, we have a handy guide which can provide you with recommendations to trace them through other ways.

Enquiries of an historical nature:

Peterborough Archives Service has copies of old ERs dating from 1854 to the present day on microfilm and/or as bound copies.
