*A £20 deposit is required for laptop loan. The deposit will be fully refunded when the laptop is returned on time and in the same condition as when it was loaned.

The laptop

The laptops provided are Chromebooks running ChromeOS.

Security & Privacy Information
Chromebooks offer two ways for you to sign in:

1. Guest Mode
No Google account required
Any files, browsing history, or website logins are automatically deleted when the guest session ends.This is the safest option for users who do not want their information stored on the device.

2. Personal Google Account
Users can sign in with their own Google account. Create a Google account.
Files saved locally and browsing data will remain on the Chromebook until the device is reset. Once the laptop is returned to Central Library ,a staff member will power wash the Chromebook (factory reset) to ensure all personal data is removed.

How to borrow a laptop from Peterborough Libraries

Book an appointment:

Due to high demand, we ask you book an appointment and reserve a laptop before collecting from the library.

Devices are held at: Central Library
You can book your appointment by calling 01733 864 280, emailing centrallibrary@peterboroughlimited.co.uk or by visiting us at Central Library, Broadway, Peterborough PE1 1RX

Complete application:

During your appointment you will be asked to complete a short application and pay a deposit fee of £20.

The deposit will be fully refunded when the laptop is returned on time and in the same condition as when it was loaned.

Induction:

At collection, we offer a brief induction on how to use the Chrome book, help with setting up an email account (if required) and information on our free computer courses available at all our libraries. We will help with any other queries you may have.

Loan period:

1 week (7 days). Devices must be returned to the Central Library before the loan period can be extended. Extensions are subject to availability.

Peterborough Libraries Acceptable Use Policy

Return the device:

After 7 days, return the Chrome book on time and in the same condition as when it was loaned. Complete a short survey and receive your refunded £20 deposit.

Factory reset:


Once the laptop is returned to Central Library ,a staff member will power wash the Chromebook (factory reset) to ensure all personal data is removed.

How to use the equipment

Connecting to WiFi:

You can connect the laptops and tablets to the internet on your home broadband. If you don’t have the Internet at home, all 10 Peterborough Libraries offer free WiFi or alternatively connect to a CambWifi hotspot around Cambridgeshire and Peterborough City Centre.

Saving Documents and Files
We recommend users to save data either to a digital cloud storage service or on an external hard drive, such as a USB drive.

Language options

Chromebooks support a wide range of language preferences.

Users can change their keyboard and input language by going to:

  1. At the bottom right, select the time.
  2. Select Settings > Advanced.
  3. In the "Languages and inputs" section, select Languages.
  4. To change your Chromebook's language, next to "Device language," select Change.
  5. Type or choose your preferred language.
  6. Select Confirm.
